Trump Warns Iran Over Next Supreme Leader as Middle East Tensions Escalate

Amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the debate over Iran’s next Supreme Leader has intensified, drawing sharp reactions from Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Tehran, saying the selection of Iran’s next Supreme Leader without American approval could have serious consequences.

Trump’s Warning to Tehran

In an interview with ABC News, Trump stated that Iran should consider the global implications while choosing its next Supreme Leader. According to him, if the leader is selected without the consent or acceptance of the United States, it would be extremely difficult for that leader to remain in power for long.

Trump added that the United States does not want to face a similar crisis every decade, especially when issues related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions continue to create instability in the region. He emphasized that Washington’s primary concern is preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensuring long-term security in the Middle East.

Iran Claims Successor Has Been Chosen

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have indicated that the process of selecting the next Supreme Leader is already underway. Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Al-Ekassir claimed that a suitable candidate has already been identified.

In a video released by Iranian outlet NoorNews, Heidari said the chosen candidate is someone who would be “unacceptable to Iran’s enemies.” He also stated that the candidate has been approved by the majority of members of Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei Emerges as Possible Candidate

Political observers believe that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, could be among the leading contenders for the position. However, U.S. officials have previously expressed opposition to this possibility. Trump had earlier described Mojtaba Khamenei as an “unacceptable option” for the United States.

Only Two Supreme Leaders in Five Decades

Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic, Iran has had only two Supreme Leaders. The first was Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the country after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. After his death, Ali Khamenei assumed the role and remained Iran’s Supreme Leader for nearly 37 years, shaping the country’s political structure, military policy, and nuclear program.

Death of Khamenei Sparks Power Struggle

According to reports from Reuters, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on Tehran on February 28 during coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel. The strikes reportedly targeted several senior Iranian military and political figures.

Sources claim that Mojtaba Khamenei survived the attack, which has further intensified speculation about his possible elevation to Iran’s top leadership position.

Israel Issues Direct Threat

At the same time, Israel has also issued a warning regarding Iran’s leadership transition. Israeli military officials stated that they would not hesitate to target Iran’s next Supreme Leader if he continues policies perceived as threats to Israel’s security.

Israeli forces also warned that individuals involved in the selection process of Iran’s next leader could be monitored or targeted if necessary.

A Decision With Global Impact

With Iran preparing to choose a new Supreme Leader, the development has become a matter of international concern. The leadership transition is likely to influence Iran’s nuclear policy, regional alliances, and military posture, making it one of the most critical geopolitical decisions in the Middle East today.
